A heated backyard garden, hidden behind a Christopher Street bar
Most West Village outdoor seating is a sidewalk table. The Beer Garage at 118 Christopher Street has a walled garden behind the room, and it is heated, which makes it the backyard garden bar in the West Village that works on a January night as well as a June one.

Ask for a backyard garden bar in the West Village and you get lists of sidewalk cafes. This page is about the other kind: an enclosed garden behind the bar, off the street, with heat. It covers what makes The Beer Garage the backyard garden bar in the West Village, what the garden at The Beer Garage is, how it compares with the neighborhood’s other outdoor options, what is on the menu, the hours, and the walk from each train, all checked on September 15, 2026.
The short version. The Beer Garage at 118 Christopher Street in the West Village has a hidden, heated backyard garden behind the bar, three minutes on foot from the 1 train at Christopher Street. It is the enclosed-garden option in a neighborhood where most outdoor drinking is a sidewalk table. The West Village kitchen is standard; the gluten-free one is in Park Slope.
Two kitchens, one rule. The Beer Garage in the West Village, Manhattan, has a standard kitchen, and the 118 Christopher Street menu lists nothing as gluten-free. The 100 per cent gluten-free kitchen is the Park Slope, Brooklyn location at 148 5th Avenue. If gluten-free food is the reason you are choosing a bar, use the Brooklyn versus Manhattan guide and go to Park Slope.

What the backyard garden bar in the West Village actually is
The backyard garden bar in the West Village is The Beer Garage at 118 Christopher Street, a converted-garage-style bar whose back room opens onto an enclosed garden with hedge walls, string lights, wooden tables and heaters, described by the bar itself as a heated secret backyard garden.
You reach it through the bar, not from the street, which is why people call it hidden. The front room is exposed brick, a long counter with blue stools, chalkboard draft and bottle lists, a dartboard and televisions; the garden behind it is walled in green hedge hung with license plates, the auto-shop decor that runs through both Beer Garage locations. The Google listing for the bar, read September 15, 2026, carries the attributes Outdoor seating, Bar games and Happy hour drinks, identifies the business as women-owned, and shows 4.5 stars on 161 reviews.

Possible downside at The Beer Garage in the West Village: the room and the garden are both small, the garden is first come first served, and the hours published by Google and by the website disagree (see the hours section), so call before a midday visit.

Backyard, sidewalk or beer garden: the West Village options compared
Among West Village bars with outdoor seating, only The Beer Garage describes an enclosed backyard garden on its own site, which is what makes it the backyard garden bar in the West Village rather than one of the sidewalk options; Dante and Boucherie list outdoor seating without saying what kind, and the nearest true beer garden, The Standard Biergarten, is a covered street-level space in the Meatpacking District, 15 minutes away on foot.
Fairness first, because each of these wins on something. Dante West Village is open from 10:00 AM and is a cocktail destination. Boucherie is a French restaurant with a 4.8 rating on more than ten thousand reviews and an outdoor cafe. The Standard Biergarten is far bigger than anything on Christopher Street, is heated in winter like ours, and has table tennis. Houston Hall is a large beer hall with a long list. What none of them publish is a hidden backyard behind the bar, and that is the whole case for the backyard garden bar in the West Village.
| Bar | Address | Outdoor space, per the source | Walk from 118 Christopher St | Google rating | Garden score |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dante West Village | 551 Hudson Street | Indoor and outdoor seating daily; type not specified | 5 minutes, 0.2 mile | 4.4 (1.3K) | 7 |
| Boucherie West Village | 99 7th Avenue South | Outdoor cafe; type not specified | 4 minutes, 0.2 mile | 4.8 (10K) | 7 |
| The Standard Biergarten | 848 Washington Street (Meatpacking) | Street-level beer garden under the High Line, open-air in summer, heated in winter | 15 minutes, 0.7 mile | 4.1 (1.8K) | 5 |
| Houston Hall | 222 West Houston Street | No outdoor seating listed on Google | 9 minutes, 0.4 mile | 4.2 (1.5K) | 0 |
| The Beer Garage, West Village | 118 Christopher Street | Heated secret backyard garden behind the bar | 0 minutes | 4.5 (161) | 10 |
Where the others win: Dante on hours and cocktails, Boucherie on dinner and review volume, The Standard Biergarten on size and table tennis, Houston Hall on room and beer list length. Skip The Beer Garage if you need a table for ten or a reservation for the garden; it is a neighborhood bar, not a hall.
Is the garden open in winter?
The Beer Garage describes the West Village garden as heated, so the backyard garden bar in the West Village is built to run past October, though on a cold night you should ask whether the heaters are on before you settle in.
Two honest limits. We have not measured temperatures in the garden and do not claim a number, and heaters warm the table, not the walk to it.
The city rule that used to pull roadway dining setups off the street from November 30 to March 31 never applied to a backyard on private property, and as of the bill the Mayor signed on August 31, 2026, roadway dining is going year-round too, with NYC DOT rules to follow. The practical difference is that a hedge-walled garden behind a bar does not depend on a sidewalk permit or the weather at the curb, which is why the backyard garden bar in the West Village keeps its season when the sidewalk cafes lose theirs.

Bars with heated outdoor seating in the West Village
For a bar with heated outdoor seating in the West Village, two venues say “heated” on their own websites: The Beer Garage at 118 Christopher Street, whose backyard garden behind the bar is heated, and The Standard Biergarten at 848 Washington Street, a 15-minute walk away in the Meatpacking District, which describes itself as open-air in the summer and heated in the winter. Dante and Boucherie list outdoor seating but do not say whether it is heated.
| Venue | Outdoor space | Heated, per its own site | Winter hours | Walk from 118 Christopher St |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Beer Garage, West Village | Enclosed backyard garden behind the bar | Yes: “heated secret backyard garden” | Not published separately; see Hours | 0 minutes |
| The Standard Biergarten | Street-level beer garden under the High Line | Yes: open-air in summer, heated in winter | Mon to Wed 3:00 to 11:00 PM; Thu 2:00 to 11:00 PM; Fri 2:00 PM to 2:00 AM; Sat noon to 2:00 AM; Sun noon to 11:00 PM | 15 minutes, 0.7 mile |
| Dante West Village | Indoor and outdoor seating daily | Not stated | Not published separately | 5 minutes, 0.2 mile |
| Boucherie West Village | Outdoor cafe | Not stated | Not published separately | 4 minutes, 0.2 mile |
Check that the list is still true. Listicles age badly. HeadBox’s West Village outdoor-bars guide still describes the walled courtyard at Temperance, 40 Carmine Street, as having “overhead heating for colder weather”, but Google Maps showed Temperance as permanently closed when we checked on September 25, 2026. Before you walk over for a heated table, confirm the bar is open, and on a cold night call to ask whether the heaters are on. For ours, that number is 646-490-4301.
What to eat and drink in the garden
The menu at the backyard garden bar in the West Village is bar classics from a standard kitchen: double-fried wings, hand-breaded pickles, a half-pound Angus burger on brioche, a shaved ribeye Philly on a hero, and an all-day egg sandwich the menu calls a Christopher Street favorite.
| West Village item | Price | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Our Famous Garage Wings | $14 | One pound, double-fried; mild, medium, hot, honey garlic, sweet chili, mango habanero or sweet teriyaki |
| Crunch Pickles | $14 | Hand-breaded, double-fried, spicy aioli |
| Fresh Cut Potatoes, garage loaded | $14 | Cheddar, applewood bacon, chipotle ranch |
| Garage Stack Nachos | $17 | Chicken or seasoned beef |
| The Garage Angus Burger | $18 | Half-pound, aged cheddar, bacon, onion rings, brioche, fries, coleslaw |
| Village Philly | $20 | Half-pound shaved ribeye, beer cheese, hero roll |
| The Fire Wrench | $14 | Two eggs, bacon, cheddar, jalapenos, brioche; served all day |
On the drink side, The Beer Garage pours rotating craft beer from New York breweries, and rotating means we do not print a tap list here; the chalkboard by the blue door is the current one. The West Village menu prints a suggested beer style next to several dishes, a pilsner or lager with the wings, an IPA with the Philly, which is a pairing suggestion, not a promise of what is on tap tonight. The Google listing lists a happy hour; the window and prices are not on the posted menu, so ask at the bar. The full menu is a downloadable West Village PDF.
21+ with valid ID. Please drink responsibly. Happy hour details are set at the bar and change; nothing here is an offer. If you are gluten-free, note again that this West Village kitchen is standard and the gluten-free kitchen is in Park Slope, Brooklyn.
Hours and how to get there
The backyard garden bar in the West Village, The Beer Garage, opens at noon most days and runs to midnight or later per its Google listing, read September 15, 2026, while the website footer lists a 3:00 PM weekday opening; until the two match, call 646-490-4301 before a midday visit.
| Day | Opens | Closes |
|---|---|---|
| Monday to Thursday | 12:00 PM ET | 12:00 AM ET |
| Friday | 12:00 PM ET | 1:00 AM ET |

Christopher Street is one of the best-connected blocks in Manhattan for a backyard garden bar in the West Village of this size: the 1 train is three minutes away, the PATH from New Jersey is two, and the West 4th Street hub with eight lines is seven.
| Station | Lines | Walk to the bar |
|---|---|---|
| Christopher Street PATH | PATH from Hoboken, Jersey City and Newark | 2 minutes, 0.1 mile |
| Christopher Street-Stonewall | 1 | 3 minutes, 0.1 mile, west along Christopher Street |
| West 4th Street-Washington Square | A, C, E, B, D, F, M | 7 minutes, 0.3 mile |
| 14th Street / 8th Avenue | A, C, E, L | 13 minutes, 0.6 mile |
One local mechanic: from the 1 train at Christopher Street-Stonewall, walk west along Christopher Street across Bleecker Street; number 118 is about two blocks along, a three-minute walk. From New Jersey the PATH is the answer, not the subway: the Christopher Street PATH station at 135 Christopher Street is a two-minute walk.
Which Beer Garage tonight?
Two questions settle whether the backyard garden bar in the West Village or the Park Slope, Brooklyn bar is the right Beer Garage for your night.
1 of 2: Do you need gluten-free food? Only the Park Slope, Brooklyn kitchen has it.
2 of 2: What matters most tonight?
Park Slope, Brooklyn. The garden is in the West Village, but that kitchen is standard; the 100 per cent gluten-free kitchen is at 148 5th Avenue in Park Slope, which has a sidewalk counter at its open garage front rather than a backyard. Gluten-free food in Park Slope outranks the garden in the West Village.
Park Slope, Brooklyn. Park Slope is the gluten-free kitchen and it is eight minutes on foot from Barclays Center. The West Village bar is neither.
Park Slope, Brooklyn, whatever train you are on. Only the Park Slope kitchen at 148 5th Avenue is gluten-free; the West Village kitchen is standard. Take the 2, 3, 4, 5, B, D, N, Q or R to Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center and walk nine minutes.
The West Village. The heated backyard garden is at 118 Christopher Street, three minutes from the 1 train and two from the PATH. Park Slope has sidewalk seating, not a garden.
Park Slope, Brooklyn. 148 5th Avenue is eight minutes on foot from Barclays Center; the West Village bar is across the river. Our Nets game-night guide has the leave-by times.
Pick by line. On the 1, the PATH, or the A, C, E, B, D, F, M at West 4th, the West Village garden is the short walk. On the 2, 3, 4, 5, B, D, N, Q or R to Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center, Park Slope is nine minutes away.
Use the tables above: gluten-free food means Park Slope, Brooklyn; the backyard garden means the West Village; Barclays Center means Park Slope.
How we know this. The garden description comes from beergarageny.com and from the bar’s own photographs of the space. The Google listing attributes, rating and hours were read on September 15, 2026. Competitor outdoor descriptions come from each venue’s own website where it says anything (Dante, Boucherie, The Standard Biergarten) and otherwise from its public Google listing (Houston Hall); no venue was visited and no claim is made about their heaters, capacity or prices.
All six walks were measured once, the same day, in Google Maps walking mode from 118 Christopher Street. Seven West Village prices were reread from the posted menu PDF. The garden score measures only what a source publishes, not comfort or quality; it is how we can call this the backyard garden bar in the West Village without visiting the others. We have not measured garden temperatures.

Dante and Boucherie list outdoor seating without saying whether it is heated. Some online lists still include Temperance on Carmine Street, which Google Maps showed as permanently closed on September 25, 2026.

Yes. A backyard garden on the bar’s own property, like the one at The Beer Garage in the West Village, is not a sidewalk or roadway setup and does not depend on those rules.

Yes. The best-known one near the West Village is The Standard Biergarten at 848 Washington Street, a street-level German beer garden under the High Line. The Beer Garage, the backyard garden bar in the West Village, is a different thing: a neighborhood bar with rotating New York craft beer and a hidden, heated backyard garden behind the room, rather than a beer hall with communal benches.

Yes. The Beer Garage, the backyard garden bar in the West Village, describes its outdoor space as a heated secret backyard garden, and the garden is reached through the bar at 118 Christopher Street. On a cold night, ask the bartender whether the heaters are on before you settle in; we have not measured garden temperatures and do not claim a specific range.
Does The Beer Garage in the West Village have gluten-free food?
Not from a gluten-free kitchen. The West Village kitchen at 118 Christopher Street is a standard kitchen; its menu includes panko, brioche, hero rolls and flour tortillas, and none of its dishes is marked gluten-free. The Beer Garage’s 100 per cent gluten-free kitchen is the Park Slope, Brooklyn location at 148 5th Avenue, which has its own guide on this site.
