Date night · West Village · Updated September 29, 2026
Twelve rooms within ten minutes of our garden. Here is how each one lets you in.
The West Village is full of places for a date, and each one has its own door policy: a booking app, a ticket, a drink minimum per set, cash only, or a line. We read them all before recommending anywhere, our own garden included.
- Twelve neighbors’ own sites read September 29, 2026
- Walks measured from 118 Christopher Street
- Covers and drink minimums as printed
- Quiet nights checked against league schedules
- Heated secret backyard garden at 118 Christopher Street
Picking a date night bar in the West Village is less about finding a nice room than about knowing the rules of the room before you arrive. A jazz club may want tickets bought in advance and a drink per set; a cocktail bar may only book diners; a piano bar may take cash and nothing else. Get that wrong and the date starts on a sidewalk.
So on September 29, 2026 we read the booking, hours and FAQ pages of twelve places within ten minutes’ walk of our bar at 118 Christopher Street, and wrote down exactly how each lets you in. Our own room is in the table too, with the part we do not do well stated as plainly as the rest.
For live jazz with no cover, Arthur’s Tavern at 57 Grove Street takes Resy bookings or walk-ins and asks a $15 minimum per person per set. For a booked dinner, Dante at 551 Hudson Street takes Resy reservations for diners, and The Garret West on Bleecker Street books tables and takes walk-ins. For a late, low-lit room, Art Bar on 8th Avenue is open until 4:00 AM and takes reservation requests by email a day ahead.
For a table outside, our heated backyard garden at 118 Christopher Street is three minutes from all of Grove Street, with $15 signature cocktails. We do not publish a booking link, so call 646-490-4301.
Our West Village kitchen is a standard one, and its printed menu labels no dish gluten-free, so it is not the room for a coeliac date. Our Park Slope bar in Brooklyn is: its whole menu is printed under “100% gluten-free”, and the Brooklyn version of this guide is our date night bar in Park Slope.
In the West Village, cocktails, wine and cider are the easier order for a gluten-free guest than draft beer, which is brewed from barley unless labeled.
Date night bar in the West Village: how each room lets you in
Sorted by walk from our door. “Booking” is each place’s own wording where it is worth quoting; “not mentioned” means we found nothing about reservations on its site.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Beer Garage, 118 Christopher St | You are here | No booking link published; call 646-490-4301 | 3:00 to 11:00 PM Monday to Thursday; to midnight Friday and Saturday | A sports bar: the screens are on for games |

| Smalls Jazz Club, 183 W 10th St | 4 minutes, 0.2 mile | Advance tickets; walk-in tickets if any are left | By its calendar | A music charge on your tab and one drink each per set; no refunds |
| Dante West Village, 551 Hudson St | 5 minutes, 0.2 mile | Resy; “Reservations for dining guests only” | From 10:00 AM daily; to 1:00 AM on its reservations page, midnight on its hours page | Walk-ins welcomed |
| Village Vanguard, 178 7th Ave S | 7 minutes, 0.3 mile | Tickets online; “seating is first come first served” | Shows 8:00 and 10:00 PM | Admission in advance plus a one-drink minimum |
| Dante aperitivo bar, 51 Bank St | 8 minutes, 0.4 mile | “Reservations are suggested but walkins welcome” | “From 10am until late” on its reservations page; from 5:00 PM Monday to Thursday, noon Friday and 10:00 AM at the weekend, to midnight, on its hours page | Aperitivo cocktails and a raw bar |
| Art Bar, 52 8th Ave | 10 minutes, 0.5 mile | Reservation requests by email, 24 hours ahead | 4:00 PM to 4:00 AM every day | Couches in the back lounge go first |
The pattern is clear enough to plan around. Three of the twelve take an ordinary booking for two on Resy with walk-ins also welcome: Arthur’s Tavern, The Garret West and Dante on Hudson, though Dante’s is for diners. Two sell tickets instead. Marie’s Crisis takes neither, and three more say nothing, which in this neighborhood usually means the line is the reservation.
Jazz and show tunes: what the music costs
Four of the rooms above put music at the center of the evening, and each charges for it differently. This is what their own pages say.
| Room | How you pay for the music | When it plays | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arthur’s Tavern, 57 Grove St | “No cover charge. Ever.” $15 minimum per person per set | Several sets a night; the evening we checked, 5:00, 7:00 and 10:00 PM | The Grove Street Stompers have played Mondays since 1962 |
| Smalls Jazz Club, 183 W 10th St | A music charge added to your tab, plus one drink per person per set | Per its calendar; seating opens about 30 minutes before each set | Tickets are not refunded; exchanges need 24 hours’ notice |
| Village Vanguard, 178 7th Ave S | Door admission paid in advance, plus a one-drink minimum | 8:00 and 10:00 PM; seating from 7:00 and 9:30 PM | Asks guests to keep conversation to a minimum |
| Marie’s Crisis Cafe, 59 Grove St | No tickets; a two-drink minimum, cash only, drinks $7 to $10 | Music from 5:30 PM on its homepage; pianists from 6:00 PM in its FAQ | An acoustic room where everyone sings along |
For a first date, the difference matters. The Vanguard is a listening room that asks for quiet, which is romantic or awkward depending on the date. Arthur’s is the easiest to try without committing, because there is no cover and you can leave between sets. Cellar Dog on Christopher Street has jazz every night from 7:00 PM, until 11:00 PM early in the week and 2:00 AM from Thursday, with pool tables if the conversation stalls.
The nights our screens are quiet
We run a sports bar, so the honest question is when our West Village room is a date room at all. On a Knicks or Rangers night, the screens are the point. We checked every New York basketball and hockey game, every NFL primetime game and every UFC card from October 1 to November 30, plus the baseball playoffs, for evenings with nothing on.
Two evenings are clear of all of it: Friday, November 6 and Tuesday, November 24. One more, Friday, October 16, has no New York basketball, hockey, NFL or UFC, and the baseball playoff games that night have no New York team in them: the Rays knocked the Yankees out on October 7. The quietest part of any weekday is the start: we open at 3:00 PM, and the evening games have mostly not begun.
Our garden for a date, honestly
What we offer is specific. Our homepage describes the West Village bar’s heated secret backyard garden, and that is the date seat: a table out back, heated when the weather turns, three minutes from Grove Street. The cocktail list is printed with prices on our ordering menu: seven signature cocktails at $15, a martini at $15, a negroni at $14, and alcohol-free cocktails at $10. Oysters from Maine are $3 each on the menu, six at least, and our happy hour prices six for $12.
What we lack is just as specific. We publish no booking link for the West Village, so a table is a phone call to 646-490-4301. We publish the happy hour prices but not its hours. We close at 11:00 PM Sunday to Thursday and at midnight on Friday and Saturday, well before the jazz rooms. And inside, it is a sports bar with screens, which is why the garden, or one of the quiet nights, is the way to do it.
Our advice: a drink and a dozen oysters in the garden, then a walk to Grove Street for Arthur’s or Marie’s Crisis. The other half of the neighborhood is laid out in our guides to the cocktail bars and the backyard gardens of the West Village.
Which room for which date
Four rooms, four kinds of evening, each described from its own site or, for us, our own menu and homepage.
Arthur’s Tavern, 57 Grove Street. Three minutes from us, for jazz without a ticket.
- Best for a date that wants music but not a commitment: no cover, a $15 minimum per person per set, several sets a night, and a Resy booking if you want to be sure of a seat.
- Skip if you want to talk through the music; the room is built around the band.
Dante West Village, 551 Hudson Street. Five minutes from us, for dinner that turns into drinks.
- Best for a booked table: Resy reservations for diners, walk-ins welcomed, and a room open from 10:00 AM every day, until 1:00 AM by its reservations page or midnight by its hours page. Its newer aperitivo bar on Bank Street suggests booking too.
- Skip if you only want a drink at a reserved table; its bookings are for dining guests.
Art Bar, 52 8th Avenue. Ten minutes from us, for the late part of the night.
- Best for a slow end to the evening: booths in the front bar, overstuffed couches in the back, open until 4:00 AM every night, and reservation requests by email at least 24 hours ahead.
- Skip if you want the back room at the weekend and did not email a day ahead.
The Beer Garage, 118 Christopher Street. Our own room, three minutes from the 1 train.
- Best for the first hour: a table in the heated backyard garden, $15 signature cocktails, and oysters from Maine, six for $12 at happy hour.
- Skip if there is a Knicks or Rangers game on, or the evening needs to run past 11:00 PM on a weeknight.

Every room here serves alcohol, and Marie’s Crisis says on its own FAQ that it admits only guests 21 and over with valid ID. It is also cash only, so stop at an ATM before Grove Street. A date that includes three bars and a jazz set is a lot of drinks for two people; the 1 train at Christopher Street is the easy way home.
Before you go: five warnings
Jazz tickets are hard to undo. Smalls does not refund tickets and needs 24 hours’ notice to exchange them. The Village Vanguard limits refunds to requests made within 24 hours of buying, and tickets bought within 48 hours of the show are final.
The minimums are per set, not per night. Arthur’s asks $15 per person for each set, Smalls a drink per person per set, the Vanguard one drink on top of admission, and Marie’s Crisis two drinks per person.
A booking is not always a bar booking. Employees Only takes reservations for dinner only, from 6:00 to 11:00 PM, and Dante on Hudson says the same: reservations are for dining guests.
Marie’s Crisis prints two start times. Its homepage says the music starts at 5:30 PM and its FAQ says the pianists start at 6:00 PM. Plan on 6:00.
We close early and do not book online. Our garden is a good first stop, not a last one. Call ahead if you want to be sure of a table outside.
Plan the evening
Two questions, sixteen answers, all taken from the tables above.
1. What is the date?
2. What matters most?

Grove Street, three minutes from us. Arthur’s Tavern at 57 for jazz, Marie’s Crisis at 59 for show tunes; bring cash for Marie’s.
The Garret West, 296 Bleecker Street. Resy bookings and walk-ins, open from 5:00 PM on weekdays until 1:00 AM, 2:00 AM Thursday to Saturday.
The Beer Garage, 118 Christopher Street. Happy-hour cocktails, wine and prosecco are $8 on our ordering menu. Call 646-490-4301 for the hours, which we do not print.

The Beer Garage, 118 Christopher Street. Six oysters for $12 at happy hour and $15 cocktails in the garden. Our kitchen is standard, not gluten-free.
Art Bar, 52 8th Avenue. Its kitchen serves until 2:00 AM Sunday to Thursday and 3:00 AM on Friday and Saturday.
Employees Only, 510 Hudson Street. A minute from our door, with Resy reservations for dinner from 6:00 to 11:00 PM and a kitchen open until 3:00 AM.
The Beer Garage, 118 Christopher Street. Our heated backyard garden has no online booking, so call 646-490-4301 and ask for a table out back.
The Beer Garage garden. $8 happy-hour drinks and six oysters for $12, under heaters when it is cold.
Not in a garden. Ours closes at 11:00 PM Sunday to Thursday and midnight on Friday and Saturday. After that, move inside at Art Bar or Cellar Dog.
Bar Pisellino, 52 Grove Street. Three minutes away, an Italian bar spilling onto the sidewalk, open until 11:00 PM every day.
How we checked
On September 29, 2026 we opened the website of each place on this page and read its reservations, hours, tickets and FAQ pages, quoting booking policies as printed. Where a site said nothing about reservations, the table says “not mentioned” rather than guessing. For the quiet nights we used the NBA’s schedule feed, the NHL’s team schedules, NFL.com, UFC.com and Major League Baseball’s postseason schedule, in Eastern time.
Walks were measured in Google Maps walking mode from 118 Christopher Street. For our own room we used our homepage, our menu and our online ordering menu. No venue paid to appear.
A garden table, three minutes from Grove Street
The Beer Garage West Village, 118 Christopher Street, New York, NY 10014. Open from 3:00 PM Monday to Thursday, 2:00 PM Friday, noon Saturday and 1:00 PM Sunday; closing at 11:00 PM, midnight on Friday and Saturday.
Our Brooklyn room is at 148 5th Avenue in Park Slope, 718-576-3409, with a fully gluten-free kitchen and OpenTable bookings.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good date night bar in the West Village?
It depends on the evening. For jazz with no cover, Arthur’s Tavern at 57 Grove Street. For a booked dinner, Dante at 551 Hudson Street. For a late room with couches, Art Bar at 52 8th Avenue, open until 4:00 AM. For a table outside, the heated backyard garden at The Beer Garage, 118 Christopher Street.
Which West Village bars take reservations for two?
By their own sites, read September 29, 2026: Arthur’s Tavern and The Garret West take Resy bookings and walk-ins, Dante takes Resy bookings for dining guests, Employees Only books dinner only, from 6:00 to 11:00 PM, and Art Bar takes reservation requests by email 24 hours ahead. Marie’s Crisis takes no reservations.
Where can we hear jazz in the West Village without a cover charge?
Arthur’s Tavern at 57 Grove Street says it has never charged a cover; it asks a $15 minimum per person per set instead. Smalls adds a music charge to your tab, and the Village Vanguard sells admission in advance, both with a drink minimum.
Does The Beer Garage in the West Village take reservations?
It does not publish a booking link. To ask for a table, including one in the heated backyard garden, call 646-490-4301. The bar opens at 3:00 PM Monday to Thursday and closes at 11:00 PM, or midnight on Friday and Saturday.
When is The Beer Garage West Village quiet enough for a date?
Between October 1 and November 30, two evenings have no New York basketball or hockey, no NFL primetime, no UFC and no baseball: Friday, November 6 and Tuesday, November 24. Early evenings from 3:00 PM, before most games start, are quiet on any weekday.
Which West Village date spots stay open late?
By their own hours, Art Bar stays open until 4:00 AM every night, Cellar Dog until 4:00 AM on Friday and Saturday, Marie’s Crisis takes last call at 3:00 AM or 3:30 AM, and Katana Kitten and The Garret West run until 2:00 AM on busy nights. The Beer Garage closes at 11:00 PM or midnight.
The verdict
A date night bar in the West Village works best when you know its door. Arthur’s Tavern is the easiest good night on the list, Dante the easiest booking, the Vanguard the most memorable ticket, and Art Bar the place to finish. Marie’s Crisis is the wildcard: bring cash and be ready to sing.
Our heated garden is where we would start, with a cocktail and a half dozen oysters, and where we would not finish, because we close before the music does. Call ahead for a table outside, and pick a night without a Knicks game.
