Most lists of unique bars in the West Village are cocktail lists with the word unique in the title. This one uses a stricter test: a bar makes the cut only if its own website describes something no other bar on the list has, and it is scored on that, on public historic designation, and on whether there is something you can only do there. We run one of the nine, The Beer Garage at 118 Christopher Street, and we score it the same way as the other eight, which is why it lands in the middle of the table and not at the top.

The short version. The most one-of-a-kind of the unique bars in the West Village, by what each venue publishes, is Marie’s Crisis Cafe at 59 Grove Street, a cash-only show-tunes sing-along with no microphones in an 1839 building. Smalls Jazz Club, The Stonewall Inn and The Duplex follow. The Beer Garage on Christopher Street is the beer-and-a-game pick with a heated garden.

Nine rooms, one rubric, every fact from the venue’s own site. That is the whole method behind this guide to the unique bars in the West Village.

The nine unique bars in the West Village, compared

The nine unique bars in the West Village below each publish one thing on their own website that none of the other eight do, from a WPA-era etched glass mural to a fortune teller at the door, and the table scores that claim rather than our opinion of the room.

The score is out of 10 and it is built from three parts, all explained in the methodology box near the end: up to 4 for a distinct feature the venue itself states, up to 3 for a historic designation by a public body or a documented founding date, and up to 3 for something you can only do there. The Local Pack for this query on September 15, 2026 was held by The Spaniard, Dante West Village and The Spot; The Spaniard and Dante are good bars that we left off because neither publishes a feature the others lack, and that is the test.

Unique bars in the West Village. What makes each one different is quoted or paraphrased from the venue’s own website, read September 15, 2026. Walks measured in Google Maps walking mode from the Christopher Street-Stonewall (1) station the same day. Score rubric: feature 0 to 4, history 0 to 3, only-here 0 to 3.
Bar Address What its own site says makes it different Walk from the 1 Score /10
Marie’s Crisis Cafe 59 Grove Street Show-tunes-only sing-along piano bar with zero microphones, no cover, cash only; 1839 building, opened as a bar in 1929, WPA-era etched glass mural marking the site where Thomas Paine died 1 minute 10
Smalls Jazz Club 183 West 10th Street, basement Basement jazz club that has live-streamed its sets since 2007 and keeps an audio and video archive of every show; late jam sessions to 4:00 AM 1 minute 9
The Stonewall Inn 53 Christopher Street Site of the 1969 uprising; individual New York City landmark since June 23, 2015; weekly drag, karaoke, bingo and piano nights across two floors; its own IPA with Brooklyn Brewery 1 minute 8
The Duplex 61 Christopher Street Piano bar downstairs with singing bartenders and a cabaret theater upstairs; open mic every Tuesday; 4:00 PM to 4:00 AM daily 1 minute 8
White Horse Tavern 567 Hudson Street Pouring since 1880 and calls itself New York City’s second-oldest bar; literary landmark framing on its own site 7 minutes 6
Employees Only 510 Hudson Street Entered through a fortune teller’s storefront; opened in 2004 by five industry friends; late-night fare 4 minutes 6
Art Bar 52 8th Avenue Back living room with couches and a working fireplace, a digital jukebox with thousands of songs, local art on the walls; over 35 years in the neighborhood 8 minutes 6
Cubbyhole 281 West 12th Street Neighborhood queer bar since 1994 with a ceiling covered in hanging decorations and a customer-run jukebox 7 minutes 6
The Beer Garage, West Village 118 Christopher Street Car-shop room hung with license plates, a car grille on the garden wall, rotating New York craft beer, darts and the game on, and a heated backyard garden hidden behind the bar 3 minutes 6

Where the others win: Marie’s Crisis and The Duplex on singing, Smalls on live music every night, The Stonewall Inn on history that a city agency has certified, White Horse on age, Employees Only on cocktails, Art Bar and Cubbyhole on a late jukebox night. Skip The Beer Garage if you came to sing, to hear a set, or to stand where something happened; come if you want a pint of New York beer, a game on, and a garden with heaters.

One kitchen note before the list. The Beer Garage in the West Village, Manhattan, has a standard kitchen, and its menu at 118 Christopher Street flags no dish as gluten-free. The 100 per cent gluten-free kitchen is the Park Slope, Brooklyn location at 148 5th Avenue, covered in the Brooklyn versus Manhattan guide.

Which West Village bars are landmarks, and which just say so

Only one of the unique bars in the West Village on this list is an individually designated New York City landmark: The Stonewall Inn at 53 Christopher Street, designated by the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission on June 23, 2015, the first site the city landmarked primarily for its significance to LGBT history.

That distinction matters because “historic” is the most overused word in lists of unique bars in the West Village. The Landmarks Preservation Commission’s own press release notes that Stonewall already sat inside the Greenwich Village Historic District, designated on April 29, 1969, months before the uprising. Most of the blocks on this list sit inside that district too, which protects buildings, not bars; a bar in a landmarked building is not itself a landmark.

So the table gives full history points only to Stonewall, and partial points to venues with a documented date on their own site: White Horse Tavern’s 1880, Marie’s Crisis Cafe’s 1839 building and 1929 opening, Cubbyhole’s 1994, Art Bar’s 35 years, Employees Only’s 2004. The Beer Garage opened its West Village room after the original Park Slope garage and gets one history point, for the converted-garage idea it carried over the river, not for age.

Historic claims among the unique bars in the West Village, and who backs each one. NYC LPC facts from the Commission’s June 23, 2015 press release; every other date from the venue’s own website; all read September 15, 2026.

Things you can only do at these bars

The third part of the score asks what you can do at each of the unique bars in the West Village that you cannot do at the other eight, and the answers are specific: sing a full show tune with a room and no microphone at Marie’s Crisis, sit through a 1:00 AM jam session at Smalls, get your fortune read on the way into Employees Only, or drink a New York craft beer under heaters in a hedge-walled garden at The Beer Garage.

Some of the unique bars in the West Village come with rules worth knowing before you go. Marie’s Crisis is cash only, takes no reservations, sells no tickets and asks for two drinks per person, all per its own FAQ. Smalls publishes set times of 6:00 PM, 7:30 PM, 9:00 PM and 10:30 PM with jams running late; if you want a seat, go to the early set.

The Stonewall Inn runs karaoke on Fridays at 6:00 PM and its drag show on Sundays with doors at 9:30 PM. The Duplex holds open-mic stand-up on Tuesdays from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. At The Beer Garage the garden is first come first served, and the game on the screens is whatever is on that night; there is no team affiliation and no reserved section.

Where The Beer Garage fits, honestly

Among the unique bars in the West Village, The Beer Garage at 118 Christopher Street is the one for a pint of rotating New York craft beer with a game on, in a room dressed like a garage, with a heated backyard garden behind it; it scores 6 of 10, tied sixth, because its history is short and its distinctness is decor and the garden rather than something you can do nowhere else.

What the room is, and why it belongs with the other unique bars in the West Village: exposed brick hung with New York license plates, a guitar on the wall, a corrugated-metal bar front with blue stools, chalkboard draft and bottle lists, a dartboard and televisions. Through the back, the garden: hedge walls, more plates, a car grille mounted on the wall, string lights and heaters, which has its own page, the backyard garden guide, so we will not repeat it here.

The West Village kitchen sends out double-fried wings, hand-breaded pickles and a half-pound Angus burger; prices are below and dated. The Google listing for the bar, read September 15, 2026, shows 4.5 stars on 161 reviews, attributes Outdoor seating, Bar games and Happy hour drinks, and identifies the business as women-owned.

Prices as of September 2026, from the posted West Village menu (July 2026 upload), reread September 15, 2026. West Village menu only; the Park Slope, Brooklyn menu is different and is 100 per cent gluten-free there.
West Village item Price What it is
Our Famous Garage Wings $14 One pound, double-fried; seven sauces from mild to mango habanero
Crunch Pickles $14 Hand-breaded, double-fried, spicy aioli
Garage Stack Nachos $17 Chicken or seasoned beef
The Garage Angus Burger $18 Half-pound, aged cheddar, bacon, onion rings, brioche, fries, coleslaw
Village Philly $20 Half-pound shaved ribeye, beer cheese, hero roll
The Fire Wrench $14 Two eggs, bacon, cheddar, jalapenos, brioche; all day

Possible downside at The Beer Garage in the West Village: it is small, the garden is first come first served, and the opening hours published by Google and by the website disagree (noon versus 3:00 PM on weekdays), so call 646-490-4301 before a midday visit. There is no live music and no stage; if that is the night you want, Smalls and The Duplex are one minute from the train.

21+ with valid ID. Please drink responsibly. Happy hour windows and prices at every bar on this page are set by that bar and change; nothing here is an offer. Marie’s Crisis requires a valid ID for 21 and over per its own FAQ. The Beer Garage’s West Village kitchen is standard; its gluten-free kitchen is in Park Slope, Brooklyn.

Hours, walks and the 1 train

Seven of the nine unique bars in the West Village are within four minutes of the Christopher Street-Stonewall station on the 1 train, and four of them, The Stonewall Inn, The Duplex, Marie’s Crisis Cafe and Smalls, are within one minute, so the station is the right meeting point for a night that moves between them.

Opening hours as published on each venue’s own website, read September 15, 2026, all times ET. The Beer Garage hours are from its Google listing the same day; the site footer lists shorter hours and the two will be reconciled. Where a site does not publish hours, the cell says so.

Which unique bar tonight?

Two questions route you to the right one of the unique bars in the West Village for the night you actually want, and the answer is not always us.

1 of 2: What do you want to do?

Use the tables above: singing means Marie’s Crisis or The Duplex; live music means Smalls; history means The Stonewall Inn; a beer with the game or a heated garden means The Beer Garage.

How we know this. Every claim about another bar comes from that bar’s own website, read September 15, 2026; no venue was visited, no rating of ours is implied, and where a site does not publish hours the table says so. The Stonewall Inn’s landmark status and the Greenwich Village Historic District date come from the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission’s June 23, 2015 press release.

All nine walks were measured once, the same day, in Google Maps walking mode from the Christopher Street-Stonewall station. The score is three parts: distinct feature stated on the venue’s own site (0 to 4), historic designation by a public body or a documented date on the site (0 to 3), and an activity you can only do there (0 to 3). It measures what is published, not how good a night you will have.

Six West Village prices were reread from the posted menu PDF. The Beer Garage’s Google attributes and rating were read the same day; the rating appears with its date and is not in this page’s structured data.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most iconic West Village bars?

By public record rather than opinion, the two are The Stonewall Inn at 53 Christopher Street, which the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission designated an individual landmark on June 23, 2015, and the White Horse Tavern at 567 Hudson Street, which has poured since 1880 and calls itself the city’s second-oldest bar. Marie’s Crisis Cafe on Grove Street, in an 1839 building on the site where Thomas Paine died, is the third most people name.

What are some hidden bars in the West Village?

Three of the unique bars in the West Village are hidden by design. Employees Only at 510 Hudson Street is entered through a fortune teller’s storefront. Smalls Jazz Club at 183 West 10th Street is a basement, with the door at the bottom of a stair. The Beer Garage at 118 Christopher Street hides a heated backyard garden behind the bar; you walk through the room to reach it, and there is no sign of it from the street.

What are the best day drinking bars in West Village, Manhattan?

Go by published opening times. The Spaniard at 190 West 4th Street opens at 11:00 AM on weekends and noon on weekdays per its own site, The Stonewall Inn opens at 1:00 PM on weekends and 2:00 PM on weekdays, and The Beer Garage at 118 Christopher Street lists a noon opening on its Google listing as of September 15, 2026. Most other unique bars in the West Village open at 4:00 PM or 6:00 PM.

What is the coolest bar in NYC?

There is no measurable answer, so this page does not name one. Instead it scores nine unique bars in the West Village on three things each venue publishes about itself: a feature no other bar on the list has, a public historic designation, and something you can only do there. On that rubric Marie’s Crisis Cafe scores 10 of 10 and Smalls Jazz Club 9; The Beer Garage scores 6.

Which unique bars in the West Village are closest to the 1 train at Christopher Street?

Four are within one minute of the Christopher Street-Stonewall station on the 1 train, measured in Google Maps on September 15, 2026: The Stonewall Inn (53 Christopher Street), The Duplex (61 Christopher Street), Marie’s Crisis Cafe (59 Grove Street) and Smalls Jazz Club (183 West 10th Street). The Beer Garage at 118 Christopher Street is three minutes west along Christopher Street, and Employees Only at 510 Hudson Street is four.

Does The Beer Garage in the West Village serve gluten-free food?

Not as a dedicated gluten-free kitchen. The Beer Garage’s West Village kitchen at 118 Christopher Street is a standard kitchen, and nothing on its menu is labeled gluten-free. The 100 per cent gluten-free kitchen is the Park Slope, Brooklyn location at 148 5th Avenue, which is covered in its own guide on this site. If gluten-free food decides your night, go to Park Slope, Brooklyn, not to Christopher Street.

Final verdict

If you want the single most one-of-a-kind night among the unique bars in the West Village, it is Marie’s Crisis Cafe: a show-tunes sing-along with no microphones in an 1839 building, cash only, music from 5:30 PM. For live music every night it is Smalls, one minute from the same station; for history a public body has certified, it is The Stonewall Inn. The Beer Garage at 118 Christopher Street is the pick when the night is a pint of New York craft beer, the game on, and a heated garden out back, and it is three minutes from all of them, which is the real case for the block.
