Christopher Street · West Village · Updated October 13, 2026
Ten bars have a Christopher Street address. Here they are by door number, with the hours each one prints.
The bars on Christopher Street fit inside an eleven-minute walk, and they include a National Historic Landmark, a piano bar, a jazz club and a tavern founded in 1950. We read every bar’s own website on October 13, 2026 and lined them up from number 8 to number 185. Ours is number 118.
- Ten doors, numbers 8 to 185
- Nine websites read October 13, 2026
- Hours copied as printed
- Walks timed from number 118
- Heated backyard garden behind number 118
Most lists of bars on Christopher Street are really lists of the West Village with one famous name on top. This one is literal. A bar is here only if its address says Christopher Street, and the order is the order you would pass them walking west from Greenwich Avenue toward the river.
For each door we went to the bar’s own website and copied what it says about itself: what kind of room it is, when it opens, when it closes and whether it prints a happy hour. One bar has no website we could read, and we say so. The walking times start at The Beer Garage at 118 Christopher Street, because that is the door we know best.
From east to west, the bars on Christopher Street are Pieces at number 8, The Stonewall Inn at 53, Kettle of Fish at 59, The Duplex at 61, Cellar Dog at 75, TALEA at 102, Ty’s at 114, the Hangar Bar at 115, The Beer Garage at 118 and Rockbar at 185.
Kettle of Fish and TALEA open first, at noon every day. The Stonewall Inn, Kettle of Fish and The Duplex stay open until 4:00 AM seven nights a week. The sports bar on the street is ours, with a heated backyard garden, and it closes at 11:00 PM, or midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.
None of the bar websites we read for this page labels a gluten-free menu, and that includes our own kitchen at number 118, which is a standard one. The Beer Garage with the menu headed “100% gluten-free” is the Brooklyn one, at 148 5th Avenue in Park Slope; our guide to a gluten-free sports bar in NYC has the details.
On Christopher Street, treat every plate and every beer as ordinary unless the staff tell you otherwise.
Bars on Christopher Street, door by door
House numbers rise as you walk west, so this table runs from the Greenwich Avenue end to the river end. The description column is each bar’s own wording, not ours.
| Door | Bar | Walk from 118 | How it describes itself | Hours as printed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8 | Pieces | 6 minutes, 0.3 mile | “America’s favorite gay dive bar”, established 1993, with nightly drag shows and parties | Opens at 2:00 PM daily; no closing time on its homepage |
| 53 | The Stonewall Inn | 4 minutes, 0.2 mile | “A gay bar & National Historic Landmark, site of the 1969 riots that launched the gay rights movement” | Monday to Friday 2:00 PM to 4:00 AM; Saturday and Sunday 1:00 PM to 4:00 AM |
| 59 | Kettle of Fish | 4 minutes, 0.2 mile | “A Greenwich Village neighborhood bar”, established 1950, with darts and pinball; “Packers fans always welcome” | Noon to 4:00 AM every day |
| 61 | The Duplex | 4 minutes, 0.2 mile | “Piano Bar & Cabaret Theatre” | 4:00 PM to 4:00 AM, seven days a week |
| 75 | Cellar Dog | 3 minutes, 0.1 mile | “Jazz Club & Pool Bar”, with live jazz, billiards, drinks, food and games | Monday to Thursday 4:00 PM to 1:00 AM; Friday 4:00 PM to 4:00 AM; Saturday 2:00 PM to 4:00 AM; Sunday 2:00 PM to 1:00 AM |
| 102 | TALEA | 1 minute, 180 feet | A “West Village taproom & cocktail bar” with an outdoor patio, beer flights and morning coffee | Monday to Thursday noon to 10:00 PM; Friday and Saturday noon to midnight; Sunday noon to 10:00 PM |
| 114 | Ty’s | 1 minute, 46 feet | “One of New York’s first gay bars to open after” the Stonewall riots of 1969; established 1972 | Sunday to Wednesday 2:00 PM to 2:00 AM; Thursday 2:00 PM to 3:00 AM; Friday and Saturday 2:00 PM to 4:00 AM |
| 115 | Hangar Bar | 1 minute, 226 feet | No website of its own that we could read | Not read |
| 118 | The Beer Garage | Our door | A sports bar with a heated backyard garden | Monday to Thursday 3:00 to 11:00 PM; Friday 2:00 PM to midnight; Saturday noon to midnight; Sunday 1:00 to 11:00 PM |
| 185 | Rockbar | 5 minutes, 0.2 mile | “New York City’s most inclusive bar with the cheapest drinks you will find”, in its own words | Monday to Thursday 5:00 PM to 2:00 AM; Friday 4:00 PM to 4:00 AM; Saturday 2:00 PM to 4:00 AM; Sunday 2:00 PM to 2:00 AM |
Eight of the ten fall into two clusters: numbers 53 to 75 at the Sheridan Square end, and numbers 102 to 118 around our own door. Pieces is the outlier to the east and Rockbar the outlier to the west, toward the river.
Who opens first and who closes last
Read as a timetable, the street has an order to it. There is somewhere to sit from noon, and three doors that do not shut until 4:00 AM.
| Bar | Earliest opening | Latest closing |
|---|---|---|
| Kettle of Fish, 59 | Noon, every day | 4:00 AM, every night |
| TALEA, 102 | Noon, every day | 10:00 PM Sunday to Thursday; midnight Friday and Saturday |
| The Beer Garage, 118 | Noon on Saturday; 1:00 PM Sunday; 2:00 PM Friday; 3:00 PM Monday to Thursday | 11:00 PM Sunday to Thursday; midnight Friday and Saturday |
| The Stonewall Inn, 53 | 1:00 PM at the weekend; 2:00 PM on weekdays | 4:00 AM, every night |
| Pieces, 8 | 2:00 PM, every day | Not on its homepage |
| Ty’s, 114 | 2:00 PM, every day | 2:00 AM Sunday to Wednesday; 3:00 AM Thursday; 4:00 AM Friday and Saturday |
| Cellar Dog, 75 | 2:00 PM at the weekend; 4:00 PM on weekdays | 1:00 AM Sunday to Thursday; 4:00 AM Friday and Saturday |
| Rockbar, 185 | 2:00 PM at the weekend; 4:00 PM Friday; 5:00 PM Monday to Thursday | 2:00 AM Sunday to Thursday; 4:00 AM Friday and Saturday |
| The Duplex, 61 | 4:00 PM, every day | 4:00 AM, every night |
Two things stand out. First, a weekday lunchtime drink on this street means Kettle of Fish or TALEA, because nobody else has unlocked yet. Second, we are one of the early closers. Only TALEA shuts before we do, and only from Sunday to Thursday. If your night is still going at midnight, the 4:00 AM doors are all four minutes east of us.
Happy hours the street prints
Four of the nine websites mention a happy hour. Only two give you enough to plan around.
- The Duplex, number 61. Monday to Thursday, 4:00 to 7:00 PM, with well cocktails, beer and wine at $8 each.
- Rockbar, number 185. Monday to Friday, 5:00 to 7:00 PM, two for one on beer, well and call liquor.
- The Stonewall Inn, number 53. Its site says happy hour runs Monday to Friday and stops there. No hours and no prices were on the page we read.
- The Beer Garage, number 118. Our ordering menu has a happy hour drinks list at $8, covering beer, wine, prosecco and a few simple mixed drinks, but we do not publish the hours it applies. Phone 646-490-4301 and ask.
What each room is for
The addresses are close together. The rooms are not alike at all.
History you can drink in
The Stonewall Inn describes itself as a National Historic Landmark and the site of the 1969 riots, and it has poured its own Stonewall Inn IPA, made with Brooklyn Brewery, since 2017. Ty’s dates itself to 1972, three years after those riots. Pieces gives 1993 as its start. Kettle of Fish is older than all of them, established in 1950 on MacDougal Street, and its site says it has moved twice since and counts Jack Kerouac and Bob Dylan among the people who drank there.
Music and shows
Cellar Dog prints “Jazz at 7pm Every Night”, running to 11:00 PM from Sunday to Wednesday and to 2:00 AM from Thursday to Saturday. The Duplex calls itself a piano bar and cabaret theater. Pieces promises drag shows nightly, and The Stonewall Inn’s homepage carries a running list of shows and karaoke nights.
Games
Cellar Dog has billiards, ping pong and shuffleboard, all first come, first served. Kettle of Fish has two dart boards that are open to the public every night except league nights, plus two pinball machines.
Beer and a game on the screen
TALEA is a brewery taproom with flights, cocktails and coffee. We are the sports bar: screens in the front room, 37 beer and cider lines and a beer flight on the menu, and a garden out back. Kettle of Fish deserves a mention here too, because its site tells Green Bay Packers and Wisconsin Badgers fans to call for early opening times on game days.
Getting to the street
Two stations carry the street’s name. The Christopher St-Stonewall stop on the 1 train is three minutes and 0.1 mile from our door, at the Sheridan Square end, close to numbers 53 to 75. The PATH station for New Jersey is on the street itself, two minutes and 0.1 mile west of us.
End to end the walk is short. Pieces at number 8 is six minutes east of us and Rockbar at number 185 is five minutes west, so the whole run is about eleven minutes without stops.
Around the corner, not on the street
Some of the best-known rooms near Christopher Street have other addresses, which is why they are missing from the table. Employees Only is at 510 Hudson Street, 348 feet from our door. Marie’s Crisis is on Grove Street. Both are in our guide to unique bars in the West Village, and the priced zero-proof drinks at Employees Only are in our list of mocktails in the West Village.
One door on the street itself is in the table with a blank beside it. The Hangar Bar is at number 115, across from us, and we found no website of its own that loads, so we print no hours for it. Walk over and look at the door.
Number 118, honestly
The Beer Garage is the only room on this list that calls itself a sports bar. The front has screens with the game on, and the back opens into a heated garden. The ordering menu lists 37 beer and cider lines and three zero-proof drinks at $10. The kitchen is a standard one. We open at 3:00 PM from Monday to Thursday, 2:00 PM on Fridays, noon on Saturdays and 1:00 PM on Sundays.
Here is what we are not. We are not a late bar: last orders come well before the 4:00 AM rooms have hit their stride, because we close at 11:00 PM on most nights and midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. We have no stage, no piano and no pool table. And we are not part of the street’s history in the way The Stonewall Inn, Ty’s or Kettle of Fish are. If any of those is what you came to Christopher Street for, go there first and come to us for the game.
Which door for which night
Four numbers, each good at one thing, described from what its own site says.
Kettle of Fish, 59 Christopher Street. Four minutes east of us.
- Best for an early start or a very late finish: noon to 4:00 AM every day, with darts and pinball.
- Skip if it is dart league night and you wanted a board; its site says the boards are taken then.
Cellar Dog, 75 Christopher Street. Three minutes east of us.
- Best for a group that wants something to do: jazz from 7:00 PM, plus billiards, ping pong and shuffleboard.
- Skip if you need a guaranteed table; the games are first come, first served.
The Duplex, 61 Christopher Street. Four minutes east of us.
- Best for a piano bar with a printed happy hour: $8 drinks from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, Monday to Thursday.
- Skip if you want a drink before 4:00 PM; that is when it opens, every day.
The Beer Garage, 118 Christopher Street. Number 118, between the 1 train and the PATH.
- Best for a game on the screens, a long beer list and a heated garden to sit in afterward.
- Skip if you are still going after midnight, or you want a show with your drink.

These are bars, and New York bars check age. The Stonewall Inn spells it out on its homepage: you must be 21, and a physical ID is required. Assume the same at every door on the street, ours included, and pace yourself if you plan to visit more than one.
Before you go: five warnings
- Hours change faster than websites. Everything here was read on October 13, 2026. Phone ahead for anything that matters.
- A missing closing time is not a promise. Pieces prints when it opens and nothing about when it shuts.
- Show nights fill up. Cellar Dog’s games are first come, first served, and The Stonewall Inn takes no reservations at all.
- Game days bend the hours. Kettle of Fish opens early for some Packers and Badgers games, but only if you call to check which.
- The street name is used loosely. Plenty of guides file Grove Street and Hudson Street rooms under Christopher Street. Check the address before you promise to meet someone there.
Find your door
Choose a time, then choose what you are after. Each of the sixteen answers points to a number on the street.
1. When are you going?
2. What are you after?
The Beer Garage, number 118. The screens are on from 3:00 PM Monday to Thursday and 2:00 PM on Friday. Before that, Kettle of Fish at 59 is open from noon.
Wait for 7:00 PM. Nothing on the street prints an afternoon set on a weekday. Cellar Dog’s jazz starts at 7:00 PM, and The Duplex opens its piano bar at 4:00 PM.
Kettle of Fish, number 59. Darts and pinball from noon. Cellar Dog’s pool tables do not open until 4:00 PM on weekdays.
TALEA, number 102. A brewery taproom open from noon, with flights. Our 37 lines are 180 feet away from 3:00 PM, or 2:00 PM on Friday.
The Beer Garage, number 118. The one sports bar on the street. Remember the clock: 11:00 PM close from Sunday to Thursday, midnight on Friday.
Cellar Dog, number 75. Jazz at 7:00 PM every night. For show tunes around a piano, The Duplex at 61 has been open since 4:00 PM.
Cellar Dog, number 75. Billiards, ping pong and shuffleboard, first come, first served, with the band playing from 7:00 PM.
The Beer Garage or TALEA. Thirty-seven beer and cider lines and a flight at number 118; a brewery’s own taps at number 102 until 10:00 PM on weeknights.
The Beer Garage, number 118. Open at noon on Saturday and 1:00 PM on Sunday. Packers or Badgers fan? Kettle of Fish says to call about early opening.
The Stonewall Inn, number 53. Open from 1:00 PM at the weekend, with shows listed on its homepage. Cellar Dog opens at 2:00 PM and the jazz follows at 7:00 PM.
Cellar Dog, number 75. Tables from 2:00 PM on Saturday and Sunday. Kettle of Fish has had its dart boards open since noon.
TALEA, number 102. Flights on the outdoor patio from noon. We open at noon on Saturday too, and at 1:00 PM on Sunday.
Kettle of Fish, number 59. We are closed by midnight. Kettle of Fish, which welcomes sports fans on its own site, runs to 4:00 AM.
The Duplex, number 61. Open until 4:00 AM every night. From Thursday to Saturday, Cellar Dog’s jazz also runs to 2:00 AM.
Kettle of Fish, number 59. Darts until 4:00 AM, any night that is not league night. On Friday and Saturday, Cellar Dog is open to 4:00 AM as well.
The Stonewall Inn, number 53. Open to 4:00 AM, and it pours its own Stonewall Inn IPA. TALEA and The Beer Garage are both closed by then.
How we checked
We started with the street, not with a ranking. A bar qualified if its own website, or a listing where it has no site, gives a Christopher Street address, and we set the ten in house-number order. Restaurants with a bar counter were left out. Then we opened each bar’s website on October 13, 2026 and copied its description of itself, its hours and any happy hour, word for word where the table uses quotation marks.
It does not rank the bars, and nobody on our team visited the other nine to write it. The walking times are Google Maps estimates from number 118, taken the same day. Our own hours are from the footer of our website and our drinks from our ordering menu.
No bar paid or asked to be included. If a door on Christopher Street is missing, it is because we did not find it, and we would like to know.
Number 118: the game, the garden, 37 lines
The Beer Garage West Village is at 118 Christopher Street, New York, NY 10014, three minutes from the 1 train. Monday to Thursday we open at 3:00 PM and close at 11:00 PM; Friday runs 2:00 PM to midnight, Saturday noon to midnight and Sunday 1:00 to 11:00 PM.
Across the river, The Beer Garage Park Slope is at 148 5th Avenue, Brooklyn, 718-576-3409, where the whole kitchen is gluten-free.
