Date night · Manhattan · Updated September 30, 2026
A Manhattan date can cost $44 or $130 before the food. Nine rooms, priced from their own sites.
Uptown piano bars, a Midtown rooftop, three jazz clubs and two hidden cocktail rooms: we read what each one charges to get in, what two drinks cost and whether you can book, then measured the trip from our West Village door.
- Nine rooms outside the Village, read on their own sites September 30, 2026
- Covers, minimums and the price of two cocktails
- Saturday 7:00 PM travel from 118 Christopher Street
- Three jazz clubs with tickets, one with a $20 minimum
- Our gluten-free kitchen is in Park Slope, not here
The hard part of choosing a date night bar in Manhattan is not the list of famous rooms; it is the surprise at the door. A cover charge, a ticket, a per-person minimum or a walk-in-only line changes what the night costs before the first drink lands. So on September 30, 2026 we read nine celebrated rooms outside the West Village on their own websites and wrote down exactly those things, plus the fastest Saturday evening trip from our bar at 118 Christopher Street.
The range is wide. Two cocktails at a Midtown rooftop with no cover cost from $44; a table at the Carlyle’s piano bar costs up to $70 in cover before its $30 martinis arrive. The West Village has its own page, our guide to a date night bar in the West Village, with a dozen rooms within ten minutes of The Beer Garage in the West Village; this one covers the rest of the island.
For music with no ticket, Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle has nightly piano from 5:30 PM and a jazz trio from 9:00 PM, with a cover of $20 to $35 per person and cocktails from $30. For jazz on a budget, Dizzy’s Club at Columbus Circle runs late-night sessions Thursday to Saturday at 10:45 PM for $15 at the door, no reservation needed, 16 minutes from our door.
For a view without booking, 230 Fifth takes no reservations and is open past 1:00 AM every night, 15 minutes away. For a hidden room, The Up & Up on MacDougal Street is a ten-minute walk, books on Resy for up to six and welcomes walk-ins.
Bemelmans marks its shrimp cocktail gluten-free and Ophelia labels its prix fixe with a G for gluten-free dishes; the jazz clubs and the rooftop print no such labels. None of these nine kitchens says it is gluten-free throughout.
Ours is not either, at 118 Christopher Street: the West Village kitchen is a standard one. The Beer Garage kitchen that is gluten-free on every plate is in Park Slope, at 148 5th Avenue, and our Brooklyn date night guide starts from there.
Date night bar in Manhattan: nine rooms and what it costs to walk in
Sorted by travel time from 118 Christopher Street: Google Maps walking time for the two rooms in the Village, and its fastest public transit option for a Saturday leaving at 7:00 PM for the rest. “At the door” is the room’s own policy; where its site says nothing, the column says so.
| Room | Neighborhood | From our door | At the door | Getting a table |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Beer Garage, 118 Christopher St | West Village | You are here | No cover | Walk in; no booking link, call 646-490-4301 |
| Blue Note, 131 W 3rd St | Greenwich Village | 9-minute walk | Ticket for every show, 8:00 and 10:30 PM, priced per artist on Ticketweb | Ticket; groups of 8 or more by package |
| The Up & Up, 116 MacDougal St | Greenwich Village | 10-minute walk | No cover | Resy, up to 6; walk-ins welcomed |
| 230 Fifth, 230 5th Ave | NoMad | 15 minutes by PATH | No cover printed; “no reservations required” | Walk in; event bookings only |
| Dizzy’s Club, Broadway at 60th St | Columbus Circle | 16 minutes by subway | Ticket for the 7:00 and 9:30 PM sets; late-night sessions Thu-Sat 10:45 PM, $15 at the door | Tickets; “reservations strongly encouraged”, walk-ups limited |
| Birdland, 315 W 44th St | Theater District | 18 minutes by subway | Ticket per set plus a $20 food or drink minimum per person, per set | Ticketweb only; ages 10 and up |
| The Campbell, 15 Vanderbilt Ave | Grand Central | 23 minutes by subway | No cover | Reservation form on its site |
| Please Don’t Tell, 113 St Marks Pl | East Village | 30 minutes by bus | Not stated on its site | Resy; nothing else printed |
| Ophelia, 3 Mitchell Pl, 26th floor | Midtown East | 31 minutes by subway | No cover printed | Resy |
| Bemelmans Bar, 35 E 76th St | Upper East Side | 40 minutes by transit | Cover from 5:30 PM: $20 to $25 per person at the bar, $25 to $35 at a table, depending on the artist | Not stated on its site |
Three things stand out. Four of the nine charge to get in, and three of those are jazz clubs where the charge is a ticket. Only two say plainly that walk-ins are fine, 230 Fifth and The Up & Up. And the most famous room on the page, Bemelmans, prints its cover charge but not how to reserve.
What two cocktails cost
The cheapest cocktail each room prints on its own menu, doubled, before tax and tip, plus whatever the door adds for two. It is a floor, not an average.
| Room | Cheapest cocktail printed | Two of them | Door charge for two | First round for two |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Beer Garage, West Village | $14 classics, $15 signatures | $28 | None | $28 |
| 230 Fifth | Not printed | Not printed | None printed | Not printed |
| The Up & Up | List printed without prices | Not printed | None | Not printed |
| Please Don’t Tell | Not printed | Not printed | Not stated | Not printed |
| Ophelia | $21 | $42 | None printed | $42 |
| The Campbell | $22 classics, $24 house | $44 | None | $44 |
| Dizzy’s Club, late session | Not printed | Not printed | $30, two $15 door tickets | $30 plus drinks |
| Birdland | Not printed; $20 minimum per person per set | At least $40 between you | Two tickets, priced per show | Tickets plus $40 |
| Blue Note | Not printed | Not printed | Two tickets, priced per show | Tickets plus drinks |
| Bemelmans Bar | $30 | $60 | $40 to $70 after 5:30 PM | $100 to $130 |
Only three of the nine print a cocktail price at all: Ophelia at $21, The Campbell at $22 and Bemelmans at $30. Five print a music charge or a minimum instead. The one figure every music room agrees on is that the door is separate from the drinks.
For live music: three jazz clubs and a piano bar
Bemelmans Bar, The Carlyle, 35 East 76th Street. Nightly piano, late-night jazz and the Ludwig Bemelmans murals, open from noon to midnight on Sunday and Monday, 12:30 AM Tuesday to Thursday and 1:00 AM on Friday and Saturday. Its site says the cover starts at 5:30 PM with the pianist’s opening set and the trio from 9:00 PM: $20 to $25 a person at the bar, $25 to $35 at a table. Martinis run $31 to $43 and signature cocktails $30 to $38, so two people at a table can spend $130 before a plate.
Dizzy’s Club, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Broadway at 60th Street. Ticketed sets most nights, with reservations “strongly encouraged” and walk-ups limited. The bargain is its late-night session, Thursday to Saturday at 10:45 PM: $15 at the door, no reservation needed. Sixteen minutes from our door on the 1 train.
Birdland, 315 West 44th Street. Sets at 7:00, 8:30 and 9:30 PM depending on the night, tickets on Ticketweb only, and a $20 food or drink minimum per person, per set. Its site admits guests aged 10 and up, which makes it the one room here a date could bring a teenager to.
Blue Note, 131 West 3rd Street. Two shows a night at 8:00 and 10:30 PM with doors at 6:00 and 10:00, a ticket for everyone, groups of eight or more by package, and all sales final. A nine-minute walk from us; the ticket price depends on who is playing.
For a view
230 Fifth, 230 Fifth Avenue. Its site calls it the city’s largest year-round outdoor and indoor bar and says no reservations are required. The bar runs to a 1:30 AM last order Sunday to Thursday, a 2:00 AM last entry on Friday and 2:30 AM last order on Saturday, with a 2:00 to 5:00 PM happy hour; the cocktail prices are not readable on its menu page.
Ophelia, 3 Mitchell Place, 26th floor. Open Monday to Wednesday 5:00 to 11:00 PM, Thursday to midnight, Friday and Saturday to 2:00 AM and Sunday from noon. Cocktails are $21 to $25, there is a $60 three-course prix fixe, and a Social Hour Monday to Friday from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the bar.
For a hidden room
The Up & Up, 116 MacDougal Street. Open until 1:00 AM Sunday to Wednesday and 2:00 AM Thursday to Saturday, with Resy tables for up to six and a line on its site that says walk-ins are welcomed. Its cocktail list is printed without prices; its snacks run $5 to $19, and it prices zero-proof cocktails the same as the spirited ones.
Please Don’t Tell, 113 St Marks Place. The bar behind the phone booth in Crif Dogs. Its website is a Resy link and nothing else: no hours, no menu, no prices. Thirty minutes from us by bus.
The Campbell, 15 Vanderbilt Avenue. Not hidden so much as upstairs in Grand Central, and the easiest classic room here to price: house cocktails $24 to $26 and classics $22 to $24, open noon to 2:00 AM every day with the kitchen to midnight.
Our garden, honestly
The Beer Garage at 118 Christopher Street is a sports bar, and the honest date pitch is the room behind it: a heated backyard garden under string lights, with a sign that asks guests to keep the noise down. Signature cocktails are $15 and classics $14 on our online menu, oysters are $3 each and six for $12 at happy hour, and there is no cover, no ticket and no minimum.
What we do not have is a booking link; call 646-490-4301. We also close before most of this page, at 11:00 PM and midnight on Friday and Saturday, and the TVs in the front room stay on. For the twelve rooms within ten minutes of our door, including Smalls and the Village Vanguard, see our West Village date night guide.
Which room for which date
Four rooms, four different evenings. Each line comes from the room’s own site.
Bemelmans Bar, 35 East 76th Street. Forty minutes by transit, on the Upper East Side.
- Best for the occasion date: nightly piano and a jazz trio in a murals room, open to 1:00 AM at the weekend.
- Skip if the budget is tight; the cover is $20 to $35 a person after 5:30 PM and the cheapest cocktail is $30.
Dizzy’s Club, Broadway at 60th Street. Sixteen minutes by subway, at Columbus Circle.
- Best for jazz without a ticket in advance: late-night sessions Thursday to Saturday at 10:45 PM, $15 at the door.
- Skip if you want the main set on a whim; those are ticketed and walk-ups are limited.
230 Fifth, 230 Fifth Avenue. Fifteen minutes by PATH, in NoMad.
- Best for a skyline with no planning: no reservations required, open past 1:00 AM every night, happy hour 2:00 to 5:00 PM.
- Skip if you want to know the price of a drink before you go; its menu page does not print them.
The Beer Garage, 118 Christopher Street. Our own room, with a heated garden behind the bar.
- Best for a first round that costs $28 with no door charge, and a garden table if it is free.
- Skip if you want a table held online or a room without a game on; call to ask, and the screens stay on out front.

Every drink on this page is for guests 21 and over with ID; Birdland admits younger guests for the music, not the bar. A jazz ticket buys the set, and Birdland adds a $20 minimum per person on top of it, so budget the drinks separately. Bemelmans and 230 Fifth run past 1:00 AM at the weekend, so settle the ride home before the second round.
Before you go
Covers start early. Bemelmans charges from 5:30 PM, so a 5:00 PM cocktail is the only one without the cover.
Tickets sell per set. Blue Note and Birdland sell each set separately, and Birdland’s $20 minimum is per set too; staying for a second show doubles both.
Two sites say almost nothing. Please Don’t Tell prints only a Resy link, and 230 Fifth prints its hours but no drink prices. Bemelmans prints its cover but no way to reserve.
Names that no longer lead anywhere. The web addresses we tried for Bar Pleiades and The Dead Rabbit now open a parked page and an unrelated streaming site, so we left both out rather than guess.
Ages differ. Birdland is for ages 10 and up; Westlight in Brooklyn is 21-plus from 6:00 PM; most of these rooms say nothing, and the drinks are always 21-plus.

How we checked
On September 30, 2026 we opened each room’s own website in a normal browser and read its hours, reservation, menu and ticket pages. Covers, minimums, set times and prices are the room’s own words; where a menu was published as an image we could not read, we say “not printed”. Ticket prices at Blue Note and Birdland change by artist, so we quote the policy, not a price.
Walks and transit come from Google Maps from 118 Christopher Street, transit for a Saturday departure at 7:00 PM. For our own room we used our website and our online ordering menu, read September 29, 2026. No room paid to appear.
Start with no cover in the West Village
The Beer Garage West Village, 118 Christopher Street, New York, NY 10014, three minutes from the 1 train. Heated backyard garden, $14 to $15 cocktails, oysters $3 each; open until 11:00 PM, midnight on Friday and Saturday.
Our Brooklyn room is at 148 5th Avenue in Park Slope, 718-576-3409, with a kitchen that is gluten-free on every plate and tables on OpenTable.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good date night bar in Manhattan?
It depends on the date. Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle has nightly piano and jazz with a $20 to $35 cover; 230 Fifth has a rooftop with no reservations required; The Up & Up on MacDougal Street is a hidden cocktail room that welcomes walk-ins. All were read on their own websites on September 30, 2026.
How much is the cover charge at Bemelmans Bar?
Its site says a cover applies from 5:30 PM, when the pianist’s opening set begins, with the jazz trio from 9:00 PM: $20 to $25 per person at the bar and $25 to $35 per person at a table, depending on the artist. Cocktails start at $30.
Which Manhattan jazz clubs need a ticket?
Blue Note sells a ticket for every show at 8:00 and 10:30 PM. Birdland sells tickets per set on Ticketweb and adds a $20 food or drink minimum per person, per set. Dizzy’s Club sells tickets for its main sets, but its late-night sessions Thursday to Saturday at 10:45 PM are $15 at the door with no reservation.
Which Manhattan date bars take walk-ins?
230 Fifth says no reservations are required, and The Up & Up says walk-ins are welcomed alongside Resy bookings. The Beer Garage in the West Village has no booking link and takes walk-ins; call 646-490-4301 to ask about a garden table.
What do two cocktails cost on a Manhattan date?
From the cheapest cocktail each room prints: $28 at The Beer Garage, $42 at Ophelia, $44 at The Campbell and $60 at Bemelmans, before tax and tip. Bemelmans adds $40 to $70 in cover for two after 5:30 PM. 230 Fifth, The Up & Up, Please Don’t Tell and the jazz clubs print no cocktail prices.
Is The Beer Garage in the West Village good for a date?
For the garden, yes: a heated backyard under string lights, $14 to $15 cocktails and $3 oysters, with no cover or minimum. It is a sports bar with TVs out front, it closes at 11:00 PM, midnight on Friday and Saturday, and there is no online booking, so call ahead.
The verdict
A date night bar in Manhattan is priced at the door as much as at the bar. Bemelmans is the occasion room and costs like one; Dizzy’s late session is the cheapest live jazz on the page; 230 Fifth is the view you can walk into; The Campbell is the classic room that prints every price. Blue Note and The Up & Up are both within ten minutes of our door for a night that starts in the Village.
Start with us for the garden and a $28 first round, then go uptown for the music. We would rather you knew the cover before the check arrives.
