Manhattan · Beer gardens and beer halls · Updated October 17, 2026
Eight Manhattan rooms call themselves a beer garden or a beer hall. Three of them are actually outdoors, and only two are heated for winter.
We read the website of every Manhattan beer garden and beer hall we could find on October 17, 2026, and copied what each one says about its outdoor space, its heaters, its season and the price of a half liter or a liter. Then we timed the walk from our own door at 118 Christopher Street, where a heated backyard garden sits behind a sports bar.
- Eight rooms, websites read October 17, 2026
- Two heated gardens open all winter
- A liter of German beer from $20
- Walks timed from Christopher Street
- Heated backyard garden at 118 Christopher Street
Ask for a beer garden Manhattan-wide and the answers mix three different things: open-air gardens, German beer halls with long benches indoors, and restaurants that put the word in their name. They are all good places to drink beer. Only some of them put you outside, and in late October that is the question that matters.
So this page sorts them by what their own websites say. Three rooms describe an outdoor beer garden, two of them promise heat in winter, and one closes for the season on Sunday, October 25. The other five are beer halls and German restaurants with the steins and the pretzels but no outdoor seat that their sites mention. We finish with our own room at 118 Christopher Street, which is a sports bar with a heated garden out back, not a biergarten, and says so.
The Manhattan beer gardens that are really outdoors are The Standard Biergarten under the High Line at 848 Washington Street, Loreley Beer Garden at 7 Rivington Street on the Lower East Side, and the beer garden at Frying Pan on Pier 66, which closes for the season on October 25. The Standard and Loreley both say they heat their gardens in winter.
For German beer by the liter indoors, Reichenbach Hall, Bierhaus NYC, Treadwell Park and Houston Hall are beer halls. The Beer Garage West Village has a heated backyard garden behind a sports bar, nine minutes from Houston Hall and fifteen from The Standard.
Most beer on these lists is brewed from barley or wheat. Of the menus we read, Bierhaus NYC marks several dishes (GF), including its wings, its pork knuckle and its wursts, and Houston Hall marks its Downeast apple cider as gluten-free. None of these kitchens describes itself as gluten-free, so ask about cross-contact before you order.
Our West Village kitchen is a standard one too. The kitchen where every plate is gluten-free is our other bar, The Beer Garage in Park Slope, 148 5th Avenue, Brooklyn. Our page on gluten-free beer and cider in NYC lists where to find a pint without wheat.
Beer garden Manhattan: the eight rooms, nearest first
Every walk below starts at our door at 118 Christopher Street in the West Village and follows the fastest route Google Maps offered on foot. The middle column is the room’s own description of itself, not ours.
| Room | Address | Walk from 118 Christopher St | How its own site describes it | Hours as printed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Beer Garage West Village | 118 Christopher St | 0 minutes | A sports bar with a “heated secret backyard garden” | Monday to Thursday 3:00 to 11:00 PM; Friday 2:00 PM to midnight; Saturday noon to midnight; Sunday 1:00 to 11:00 PM |
| Houston Hall | 222 W Houston St | 9 minutes, 0.4 mile | “Beer Hall & Sports Bar”, a “historic West Village beer hall” | Closed Monday; Tuesday 4:00 to 10:00 PM; Wednesday and Thursday 4:00 PM to midnight; Friday 4:00 PM to 1:00 AM; Saturday 11:30 AM to 2:00 AM; Sunday noon to 8:00 PM |
| The Standard Biergarten | 848 Washington St at 13th St | 15 minutes, 0.7 mile | A “street-level beer garden” under the trestles of the High Line | Winter hours: Monday to Wednesday 3:00 to 11:00 PM; Thursday 2:00 to 11:00 PM; Friday 2:00 PM to 2:00 AM; Saturday noon to 2:00 AM; Sunday noon to 11:00 PM |
| Loreley Beer Garden | 7 Rivington St | 28 minutes, 1.2 miles | An “indoor-outdoor” beer garden on the Lower East Side, open since 2003 | Monday and Tuesday noon to midnight; Wednesday to 1:00 AM; Thursday to 2:00 AM; Friday and Saturday to 4:00 AM; Sunday noon to midnight |
| Frying Pan NYC | Pier 66, 207 12th Ave at W 26th St | 35 minutes, 1.6 miles | A seasonal open-air bar and grill whose “beer garden is order-at-the-bar” | October: Monday to Thursday 11:30 AM to 8:00 PM; Friday and Saturday to 10:00 PM; Sunday to 9:00 PM; last day of the season Sunday, October 25 |
| Reichenbach Hall | 5 W 37th St | 43 minutes, 1.9 miles | A German beer hall in Midtown with 200 seats on communal benches | Monday 11:30 AM to 10:00 PM; Tuesday to Thursday to midnight; Friday and Saturday to 1:00 AM; Sunday to 10:00 PM |
| Bierhaus NYC | 712 3rd Ave at 45th St | 1 hour 1 minute, 2.7 miles | A “Bavarian-style beer hall” two blocks from Grand Central, serving bier by the boot since 2011 | Monday and Tuesday 11:30 AM to 10:00 PM; Wednesday to 11:00 PM; Thursday and Friday to midnight; Saturday noon to midnight; Sunday noon to 10:00 PM |
| Treadwell Park | 1125 1st Ave | 1 hour 26 minutes, 3.8 miles | A beer hall on the Upper East Side | Monday to Wednesday 4:00 to 11:00 PM; Thursday 4:00 PM to midnight; Friday 4:00 PM to 2:00 AM; Saturday noon to 2:00 AM; Sunday noon to 11:00 PM |
| Heidelberg | 1648 Second Ave | 1 hour 50 minutes, 4.8 miles | The last of the old German restaurants of Yorkville; its page description calls it “Manhattan’s favorite German Beer Garden” | Not printed on its website |
The long walks are there for honesty, not as a suggestion. From Christopher Street, the 1 train or a cab is the sensible way to Midtown and the Upper East Side, and the walk to Houston Hall or The Standard is the only one most people will make on foot.
Outdoors, heated or neither
This is the part most lists skip. We copied each room’s own words about outdoor space, heat and season. Where a site says nothing, the table says so rather than guessing.
| Room | Outdoor space, per its site | Heat in winter | Season |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Standard Biergarten | Street-level beer garden under the High Line, with ping-pong | “Heated in the winter” | “All year long” |
| Loreley Beer Garden | Outdoor garden with picnic tables for up to 8 and a 20-foot flower wall | “The Garden has heaters in the Winter” | Year-round, with decor that changes every six to eight weeks |
| The Beer Garage West Village | Backyard garden behind the bar | “Heated secret backyard garden” | Year-round |
| Frying Pan NYC | Open-air decks and a beer garden on Pier 66 | Not described; “only partial protection from the weather” | “Roughly April to mid October”; last day October 25 |
| Houston Hall | Not described | Not applicable | Year-round |
| Reichenbach Hall | Not described | Not applicable | Year-round |
| Bierhaus NYC | Not described | Not applicable | Year-round |
| Treadwell Park | Not described | Not applicable | Year-round |
| Heidelberg | Not described | Not applicable | Not stated |
Loreley is also the most seasonal room in the city. Its site runs Oktoberfest and pumpkin kegs through the end of October, a Haunted Beer Garden that it dates from October 16 in one place and October 15 in another, running through November 1, and a Heated Winter Wonderland from November 5. The Standard keeps a single winter timetable instead, opening at 3:00 PM from Monday to Wednesday and earlier from Thursday.
What a half liter and a liter cost
Prices below are copied from each room’s own menu on October 17, 2026, before tax and tip. Pour sizes are the ones each menu prints; where a menu gives no size or no price, we say that too.
| Room | Smaller pour | Liter or bigger | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Loreley Beer Garden | Half liter $10 (its own Kölsch, Spaten, Radeberger, Weihenstephan, Köstritzer) | Liter $20; boots $23 for 1 liter, $45 for 2 liters | Its Kölsch is brewed for it by KCBC in Brooklyn; 0.2 liter glasses at $4 |
| The Standard Biergarten | 16 oz $13 (one ticket) | 32 oz $26 (two tickets) | Menu dated October 8, 2026; prices are also given in tickets |
| Houston Hall | Small $9.50, Medium $14.50 | Huge $25 to $26 | Happy hour, Tuesday to Friday 4:00 to 8:00 PM and all day Sunday: 12 oz $6.95, half liter $10.50, liter $17.50 |
| Treadwell Park | 12 oz $10, 16 oz stein $14 | 32 oz $26, 64 oz pitcher $50 | Oktoberfest menu, September 18 to October 25; happy hour Monday to Friday 4:00 to 7:00 PM with select 8 oz beers at $4 |
| Bierhaus NYC | Half liter of Hofbräu $7, happy hour only | 5-liter mini keg $85 | Happy hour Monday to Thursday 4:00 to 6:30 PM, bar area only; other draft prices are not in its menu’s text |
| Reichenbach Hall | Half liter, price not printed | Liter (Maß) and boots, price not printed | The menu lists the beers and sizes but no beer prices |
| Frying Pan NYC | Not printed | Not printed | “Ask your server for our rotating selection” |
| The Beer Garage West Village | $8 to $12 a beer; most lines $10 | Pitcher $35; boot $22 | Our ordering menu prints no pour sizes; happy hour beer $8 |
| Heidelberg | Not printed | Not printed | No prices in its website’s text |
The cheapest printed liter outside a happy hour is Loreley’s, at $20 for its own Kölsch or for Spaten, Radeberger or Weihenstephan. The Standard’s 32 ounces, a little under a liter, is $26. Houston Hall’s $17.50 liter is the best deal on the page, but only during its happy hour.
Names to cross off older lists
Several names still turn up in older guides to Manhattan beer gardens. This is what their own pages showed on October 17, 2026:
- Zum Schneider. Its own site says the East Village restaurant closed in 2020. The team now runs pop-ups, and its 2026 Oktoberfest ran from September 25 to October 4 at 12 Franklin Street in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
- Treadwell Park Downtown. Its page now reads “Treadwell Park Downtown is now Casa Oaxaca”, a Mexican restaurant announced for fall 2026. The Upper East Side Treadwell Park is still open.
- Paulaner NYC. Its old website opened a blank holding page, with no menu, hours or address.
- Vol de Nuit and Lederhosen. The website addresses printed for both in older lists now show unrelated pages, one of them a gambling blog. We do not link to either.
- Frying Pan, after October 25. Not closed for good: its site calls it a seasonal venue open roughly from April to mid October, and October 25 is its last day this year.
Our heated garden, honestly
The Beer Garage West Village at 118 Christopher Street is a sports bar first. The front room has the game on; the garden behind it is walled in green hedge hung with old license plates, with high-top tables, string lights and heater poles, and our homepage calls it a heated secret backyard garden. You reach it through the bar, three minutes from the 1 train at Christopher St-Stonewall.
It is not a biergarten. There are no long benches, no liter steins on the menu and no oompah band, and the garden is small, so a group of twenty belongs at Loreley or The Standard. What our ordering menu does list is 37 beer and cider lines, five of them from German brewers: Gaffel Kölsch, Hofbräu, Paulaner, Radeberger and Weihenstephan. Most are $10, Hofbräu is $11, and happy hour beer is $8. We open at 3:00 PM from Monday to Thursday and close at 11:00 PM, or midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. Our guide to the craft beer bars in Manhattan covers the longer tap lists.
Four picks for four kinds of night
Each of these is good at one thing, judged on what its own website promises.
The Standard Biergarten, 848 Washington Street. Fifteen minutes from Christopher Street.
- Best for an outdoor beer in January: open-air in summer, heated in winter, with ping-pong under the High Line and a 2:00 AM close on Fridays and Saturdays.
- Skip if you are bringing children on a Saturday; its page says no children on Saturdays, no exceptions.
Loreley Beer Garden, 7 Rivington Street. Twenty-eight minutes from Christopher Street.
- Best for a liter for $20, a heated garden and a theme: haunted until November 1, a winter wonderland from November 5.
- Skip if you want to book the garden on a budget; a reserved Garden Party table carries a $500 food and drink minimum.
Reichenbach Hall, 5 West 37th Street. Steps from Bryant Park, by its own description.
- Best for the beer hall experience in Midtown: 200 seats on communal benches, half liters, liters and boots.
- Skip if you want to sit outside, or to know the price of a liter before you order; its menu does not print beer prices.
The Beer Garage West Village, 118 Christopher Street. Our own room.
- Best for a beer in a heated garden next to a game, with German beer on a 37-line list and the 1 train three minutes away.
- Skip if you want long tables, liter steins or a party of twenty; we are a neighborhood bar.

New York’s drinking age is 21, and every room here pours beer first. Houston Hall says it is 21 and over and asks for a physical ID at the door. The Standard Biergarten lets children in with a parent who is 21 or older from Sunday to Thursday at any time and on Friday until 6:00 PM, but never on Saturday. For anywhere else, call before you bring anyone under 21.
Five things to check first
- Every hour here is a reading, not a promise. We copied them on October 17, 2026. The Standard’s are labeled winter hours, and Frying Pan says its hours change with the weather, sometimes on the day.
- Some sites contradict themselves. Houston Hall prints Tuesday to 10:00 PM and Sunday to 8:00 PM on its page, but 11:00 PM and 9:00 PM in the page’s description. Loreley dates its Haunted Beer Garden from October 16 in one place and October 15 in another.
- Seasonal prices end. Treadwell Park’s stein prices belong to an Oktoberfest menu that runs until October 25.
- Tickets at The Standard. Its menu prices beer and food in tickets as well as dollars, so ask how the tickets work when you arrive.
- Reservations differ. Heidelberg takes none on Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Loreley offers free reservations with no minimum for groups of 20 or more on Fridays and Saturdays, while a reserved Garden Party table carries a $500 minimum.

How we checked
We listed every Manhattan venue we could find that calls itself a beer garden, a biergarten or a beer hall on its own website, and the Manhattan names that older beer garden guides still list. On October 17, 2026 we opened each website, including pages that only load in a browser and The Standard’s menu file, and copied its words about outdoor space, heat, season, hours and draft prices. We then timed each walk from 118 Christopher Street in Google Maps.
It does not rank the rooms by taste, and it is not based on visits by our team. Customer reviews shown on some sites were ignored. Bavaria Bier Haus and a few waterfront bars from older lists are missing because their websites did not respond when we checked, which is not proof that they have closed.
No venue paid to appear or asked to be left out.
118 Christopher Street: a heated garden behind the bar

In Brooklyn, The Beer Garage Park Slope is at 148 5th Avenue, 718-576-3409, with a kitchen that is entirely gluten-free.

The verdict
For a beer garden in Manhattan that keeps you outside this winter, the choice is The Standard Biergarten under the High Line or Loreley on Rivington Street; both say they heat their gardens, and Loreley prints the cheaper liter. Frying Pan is worth a last visit before October 25. For steins and benches indoors, Reichenbach Hall in Midtown and Bierhaus NYC near Grand Central are the beer halls, and Houston Hall has the best happy hour liter. When you want a heated garden and the game in the next room, walk to 118 Christopher Street.
