The Vanguard is a listening room that asks for quiet, which is romantic or awkward depending on the date. Arthur&#8217;s is the easiest to try without committing, because there is no cover and you can leave between sets. Cellar Dog on Christopher Street has jazz every night from 7:00 PM, until 11:00 PM early in the week and 2:00 AM from Thursday, with pool tables if the conversation stalls.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"quiet\">The nights our screens are quiet<\/h2>\n<p>We run a sports bar, so the honest question is when our West Village room is a date room at all. On a Knicks or Rangers night, the screens are the point. We checked every New York basketball and hockey game, every NFL primetime game and every UFC card from October 1 to November 30, plus the baseball playoffs, for evenings with nothing on.<\/p>\n<p>Two evenings are clear of all of it: <strong>Friday, November 6<\/strong> and <strong>Tuesday, November 24<\/strong>, and both were still clear when we checked the basketball, hockey and UFC schedules again on October 17, 2026. The quietest part of any weekday is the start: we open at 3:00 PM, and the evening games have mostly not begun.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"ours\">Our garden for a date, honestly<\/h2>\n<p>What we offer is specific. Our homepage describes the West Village bar&#8217;s heated secret backyard garden, and that is the date seat: a table out back, heated when the weather turns, three minutes from Grove Street. The cocktail list is printed with prices on our ordering menu: seven signature cocktails at $15, a martini at $15, a negroni at $14, and alcohol-free cocktails at $10. Oysters from Maine are $3 each on the menu, six at least, and our happy hour prices six for $12.<\/p>\n<p>What we lack is just as specific. We publish no booking link for the West Village, so a table is a phone call to 646-490-4301. We publish the happy hour prices but not its hours. We close at 11:00 PM Sunday to Thursday and at midnight on Friday and Saturday, well before the jazz rooms. And inside, it is a sports bar with screens, which is why the garden, or one of the quiet nights, is the way to do it.<\/p>\n<p>Our advice: a drink and a dozen oysters in the garden, then a walk to Grove Street for Arthur&#8217;s or Marie&#8217;s Crisis. It is also cash only, so stop at an ATM before Grove Street. A date that includes three bars and a jazz set is a lot of drinks for two people; the 1 train at Christopher Street is the easy way home.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"warnings\">Before you go: five warnings<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Jazz tickets are hard to undo.<\/strong> Smalls does not refund tickets and needs 24 hours&#8217; notice to exchange them. The Village Vanguard limits refunds to requests made within 24 hours of buying, and tickets bought within 48 hours of the show are final.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The minimums are per set, not per night.<\/strong> Arthur&#8217;s asks $15 per person for each set, Smalls a drink per person per set, the Vanguard one drink on top of admission, and Marie&#8217;s Crisis two drinks per person.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A booking is not always a bar booking.<\/strong> Employees Only takes reservations for dinner only, from 6:00 to 11:00 PM, and Dante on Hudson says the same: reservations are for dining guests.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marie&#8217;s Crisis prints two start times.<\/strong> Its homepage says the music starts at 5:30 PM and its FAQ says the pianists start at 6:00 PM. Plan on 6:00.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We close early and do not book online.<\/strong> Our garden is a good first stop, not a last one. Where a site said nothing about reservations, the table says &#8220;not mentioned&#8221; rather than guessing. For the quiet nights we used the NBA&#8217;s schedule feed, the NHL&#8217;s team schedules, NFL.com, UFC.com and Major League Baseball&#8217;s postseason schedule, in Eastern time.<\/p>\n<p>Walks were measured in Google Maps walking mode from 118 Christopher Street.
